The Goldilocks Question: How Much Economic Growth is Just Right?

A week ago I was interviewed on ABC’s Radio National, with several leading Australian economists. They were the pro-growth advocates, I was the sceptic. I’ll let you decide whether they answered the critique of growth I put forward:

  1. Just listened to the RN discussion Sam. Other than your ‘Redistribution’ question (to which there was no follow up) the ‘widening gap’ debate seemed to be ignored.
    I don’t see much point in all the details that Richard and Amy went into if we have an unsustainable social system with an increasing number of people hardly able to make ends meet.
    Am I missing something here?

    I like to think of myself as an optimist but Richard and Amy are what I would call blind optimists. There is no way we can technologically dig ourselves out of this – as you clearly pointed out! Seems we will have to face the collapsing wall and be ready to pick up the pieces to get to a sustainable life…
